T-Minus 2. Or Maybe 3.

Blasting off soon!  My original plan was to leave Monday, New Year's Eve, but the weather may hasten my departure.  The overnight lows have been flirting with dipping below freezing albeit briefly.  I haven't winterized (other than emptying the tanks) so I'm trying to dodge a bullet.

But it looks like I may be leaving as soon as Saturday and going as far south on I-10 as I can the first day in order to escape the cold temps.  So much for my plan of Wal-Mart camping en route - looks like I'll need hookups after all.

However, that gives me plenty of time to arrive in Austin by Thursday in order to coincide with my friend Sharon's work schedule.

Fortunately, my engine battery died on Xmas Day.

Fortunately as in I-wasn't-at-some-rest-area-when-it-happened.  We jump-charged the GDB and took it in the next morning.  The load-test indicated a new battery was in order.  I'm hoping that the battery just died of old age (the chassis is a 2009 and wasn't driven much at all in its past life).  The alternative - that something I can't locate is draining the battery - is too gruesome to contemplate.

So I've made my packing list and checked it twice.  Time to start loading up!

I'll miss John and Doris like crazy but I'm also looking forward to the sunny Southwest.

  1. When I took my northern trip and left my van sitting in Texas for a couple of months, I came back to a dead battery. My friends were supposed to drive it around the block once a week, but they didn't do that...how exciting on your trip though!

    1. Bummer. I drive the GDB about once a week when it's at home but I'm told the cold might also be a factor.

  2. Wow how awesome! I'd love to go somewhere warm right about now! I'll be heading to TX sometime between end of March and end of April. Everything depends on the weather! DH wants to take the new-to-us truck camper to the Outer Banks in NC a few weekends before I take off for a month! Makes sense. Then I can be SURE I know how everything works. I'm envious of your imminent departure. Happy New Year and safe travels. Perhaps we'll meet up somewhere, sometime in 2013!

    1. Leslie,

It's be great to meet up with you! When we do, I hope to be gainfully employed as you are. I'll be eager to read about the TC. Love the Outer Banks - good destination for a shake-down cruise.

  3. I'm betting that the battery just died from neglect and that a new one will fix everything.

Best wishes for your trip. I am excited to be virtually tagging along!

  8. Have fun! You're making me antsy...need to be going somewhere...anywhere...myself...but no trip in the future planned. Yet. Darn job! LOL. I'm sure it was just an old battery...I think 4 years is about the life span regardless. You'll be fine!! Can't wait to hear all about it!

    1. Thanks for the reassurance, Dawn. I know how you feel right now. As you said, it's hard to be a gypsy in a cubicle. You're too determined not to make it out.

  9. Kimmer, Good to start off your trip with a new battery - although I would have thought for a 2009 the battery would still have lots of life left in it.

I'll warn all of Quartzsite that KIMBO is FINALLY on her way here. hehehehe
