Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway

A scenic byway?  With lakes?

Who could resist?  When Phil drives, the meter is running.

The trail includes no less than 14 alpine lakes.  After a while, I lose count of how many we visit,. None fail to please.

The clear winner in the sheer beauty category is Sparks Lake.  No contest.

Diana and I taking it all in.

As we prepare to leave for the next lake, a Forest Service fish-dump truck appears.  Today about 650 trout are released into several of the lakes.  Apparently, the water temperature is just right for the transfer.

And I'm talking really big trout.  I wasn’t able to get a photo of their size but, well, catching any one of them would give you bragging rights for sure.

We stop for lunch at beautiful Devil’s Lake.  At this point, my battery is almost exhausted but I do manage a couple of snapshots of Hosmer Lake.  Some in the group will return tomorrow to kayak.

A nice day with beautiful surroundings and perfect weather.

  1. Oh, this is SO going on my list! A 4WD road to a gorgeous paddling lake! I want to be that happy kayaker lurking behind you and Diana on Sparks Lake some day! Glad to see you are having a great adventure and meeting interesting new friends!

  2. I need to add the Northwest to my list of places to visit. Are you using a smart phone to take pics? To save the battery power on an all day excursion - set the phone to airplane mode and make sure to turn of wi-fi.

    1. Hi Teri,

This is my first time out here. Always wanted to come and am so glad that I have a couple of months and not just a week like I would have had in my other life.

I have a dedicated camera. My bad - I KNEW I should have charged the battery before leaving home.

    1. Hey Becky! Good to see you! You are going to love overnightrvparking. Be sure and send the administrator confirmations/updates and also submit any new places you find that allow free overnight parking. Then you get weeks added on to your subscription. It adds up!

  5. Battery minimum to avoid disappointment: 3
One in the camera; two in the camera bag.
There just really is no substitute for having back up power, yah?

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie

    1. We have been at the Wanoga Sno Park at Mount Bachelor - about 15 miles west of Bend. It's easy to get to. Very scenic, in the shadow of Mt. Bachelor's summit at about 5500 ft. elevation. It's on National Forest land. There is a big level parking lot. No hook-ups of course, but there are a couple of vault toilets. Right on the Cascades Scenic Byway and only 12 miles from that first lake (Sparks). Sno-mobile trails all around if you like hiking without leaving home.

Not sure if you need permission to park here. Several others are camped here and they say no permit is required. A ranger comes by every day and no one has ever said anything.

If you prefer a free town stay, I was at Lowe's for several nights. They have a nice level lot that is (relatively) quiet with the usual road noise.

  7. Oh Kim the lake is just breathtaking. The snow covered mountain in the back ground makes me almost want to run for a sweater. LOL Great to have met up with these really great people.

Reading this reminds me to put my battery charger in my camera pack.
