Best Office EVER

The Good Deal School Bus

My work life has never been so simple.

I'm an online nursing professor and am teaching 1 - 3 classes at any given time.

My university offers an advanced degree for students who are already nurses. Rather than focusing on patient-care skills, my students study topics such as pharmacology, research, and professional writing.

The work keeps my gas tank full and the freedom from the brick-and-mortar world enables me to keep traveling.

Best of all, I enjoy it!

I use a Verizon Jet-Pack for wireless access

Here's my library.

Office Space

I have 3 office configurations.

A storage bin doubles as a desk.  Or, more commonly, a footrest.

2) A desk can also be set up in the front of the van.

This table conveniently stows away in the kitchen galley

and sets up as a comfy desk.

3) The best one.  Outdoors!

Even when I'm not on a road trip, I work in the van about once a week.  Here's an example.

Day at the Office

I love my new work table, installed 11/2015.

  1. I SO want to work on the road, and am starting to get info together for what I want to do. As long as there's wireless Internet, we really can work anywhere. Your set-up is so easy - that's probably one of the reasons you enjoy it so much. :)

    1. I didn't know! Well, with your experience you shouldn't have any problem. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  2. I say this a lot, but I can't think of anything more appropriate.

  3. More & more nurses are interested in doing online courses. Are your students undergrad or grad? I precept psych NP grad students every academic year & love it! This year's student will be my last since I'm retiring 12-31-2014. Love seeing your office-on-wheels!

    1. Both grad and undergrad. Good for you - I'm an NP myself. Happy Retirement!

  4. Putting a desk with an actual office chair in my RV was the best decision I made when planning my conversion van. Being comfortable while being online makes life so much better, doesn't it?

  5. Kim,

I've been following you now off and on since you first picked up the GDB. I love your pictures and the adventures you share with us. I especially appreciate you posting your trip expenses. I've been following Roadtrek for a couple years and hope to buy a used one in the near future. My concerns center around costs since I've retired and now live on a limited income. That's why your expenses are so important. Thank you again for sharing.

  6. Oh WOW!! This is great! Thank you for sharing. My husband and I will be full time RV'ers in the next 18 months or so. Would I love to pick your brain about working on the road. I am also a Nursing Professor at a private university in CT. I teach in the undergraduate program. My plan is to switch to teaching on line. I assume you are an adjunct? I will need to be full time because I need benefits but I'm concerned about the workload. I don't have to tell you about that 12 credit workload that keeps me busy 50 hrs/wk. I also hear you on the back stabbing that can go on in higher Ed. I'm looking forward to getting off this Hampster wheel I'm always on.
